Ringsted Produktionshøjskole was the other day at Saltø Å to electro-fishing when they made a great discovery. About 4 km up in Saltø they observed several specimens of the species Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). It is only the second time that Round goby is found as high up in a fresh stream. The first time was 2 km up in Sørup Å on Falster. Næstved welcome inquiries from citizens, followed by photo documentation for new discoveries of new species of fish in the municipal waters.
The species is native to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and is probably in the Baltic Sea with the ballast water of ships. In 2008, the invasive nature of black resulted goby caught for the first time in Danish waters. The number of fish has since exploded and it is feared that the black resulted goby can outcompete other small fish along the coasts, and injury including shrimp stock. The enormous growth is mainly concentrated around Zealand, Lolland-Falster and Mon. Gobies were reported seen in Karrebæk last summer by local scuba divers. Round goby is particularly special since, in addition brackish water areas like the Baltic Sea also can live in freshwater lakes and streams. Also with regard to temperature, it is special because it can handle large fluctuations from -1 to 30 C. It feeds primarily on fish eggs, larvae, amphipods, isopods and small shrimp, but large black resulted gobies can also eat small fish.
It is not yet known what the consequences of the existence of this fish in Danish waters will be in the long term, but it is highly likely that such an intense growth in the population of an introduced species will be of great ecological importance both in marine and freshwater. Among the possible ecological impact anglers is negative impact on native populations, inter alia, flounder, eel and shrimp in the Baltic, and trout populations in the Danish streams. It is almost impossible to fight this kind, since fish are constantly moving on it. It will therefore be difficult to arrange fishing techniques which only captures black resulted gobies.
