On Saturday May 25, the research vessel Vizconde de Eza, belonging to MAGRAMA, left the port of Vigo toward the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to carry out over the next three months, fisheries research campaigns called Platuxa, Flemish Cap Halibut and Black 3L, in the Regulatory Area of NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries white marlin open Organization). One of the main tasks of the study of populations of commercial fish is getting the proper management of fishery resources. Sometimes major league fishing that management is done from the data provided by the fishing sector itself (catch, effort, etc..), But these can present major league fishing problems of inaccuracy (eg undeclared data) or bias by the very nature of the activity. Therefore fisheries research campaigns represent an alternative data source, more reliable, which is used in addition to official statistics. We recently participated in the annual campaigns (3NO, Flemish Cap, and 3L, see map) conducted by the IEO and the IIM-CSIC in northeast Atlantic waters and financed by the EU. Specifically conducted trawling campaigns aimed at the evaluation of fishery resources in the NAFO Regulatory Area (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization).
In the framework of the EU, the aim of these campaigns is defined by Regulation (EC) No 199/2008 (25/2/2008) on the establishment of a Community major league fishing framework for the collection, management and use of data from the fisheries sector and support for scientific advice (which plays a key role the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, ICES) in relation to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It specifically states in Article major league fishing 12 that Member States carry out research surveys at sea to evaluate major league fishing the abundance and distribution of populations regardless of the data provided by commercial fishing.
Summarizing, we can say that the primary goal of these campaigns is to estimate indices of abundance and biomass of the species studied major league fishing independently major league fishing of fisheries statistics. You have to add the objective knowledge of the population structure and estimation of certain biological parameters (growth and reproduction) of their populations. In addition, as part of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Mangement, have been integrating new objectives to the need for data to feed ecosystem models, such as: character studies hydrographic major league fishing (temperature and salinity) and networking trophic (food ).
The sampling methodology consists of a stratified random sample approved by NAFO and described in detail in Doubleday (1981, pdf available at: Doubleday, WG, ed. The strata are the result of the combination of depth limits and certain geographic areas. The abundance and biomass estimates are based on the swept area method, based on the effective area of trawl gear.
The vessel used for such campaigns in the NAFO area is the Vizconde de Eza. The work done on board consists mainly in identifying the species (both fish and invertebrates), direct quantification or by extrapolation of the same, and biological sampling of those most relevant from a business perspective or abundance.
The scientific team integrates a campaign manager, a responsible person and recorded CTD data collected during the campaign, and twelve scientists assigned to the fishing park. These latter are divided major league fishing into two teams of five people for the grading and sampling of catches.

Another person does the sampling of invertebrates, as well as collaborating in the sampling of catches. The data collected include: the characteristics of each haul made, catches, sizes and biological sampling, analysis of stomach contents (if any), the collection of frozen or fixed samples, and purely hydrographic data obtained with CTD.

This week we premiered the documentary "Tales from the Sea: protecting the oceans", where the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and the television channel National Geographic Channel (NGC) have collaborated in its preparation. I took it in 2002. It was fantastic to woke up and see how was snowing in the middle of the sea!!!!. There were some icebergs around us. The ship was cover of a great white film of snow. Then people started to work, and most of snow dissapered. I miss go in ship during (at least and no more!) one month, living 360tuna with fishermen every hard day of their activity.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has participated in the annual meeting of the Organization of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (NAFO) which was held in the Canadian city of Halifax between 23 and 27 September. It has confirmed the good stocks that Spanish fishing fleet present in the fisheries of Newfoundland, ensuring stability for the Spanish fishing activity in the area.
Among the most interesting stocks of the Spanish fleet, NAFO has decided to increase slightly the share of cod in Division 3M (Flemish Cap), which has increased by 3 percent from the overall quota of 14,112 tonnes to 14,521, the Spain which correspond to 2,078, an increase of almost 60 tonnes over 2013.
In the case of black halibut in Divisions 3KLMNO, subject to a strict recovery plan, the fee is calculated fishin using a mathematical formula that allows fluctuations never exceed 5 percent of the share. After several years of declines of 5 percent of the share, in 2014 the share will stand at 15,441 tons, a drop of only 0.45 percent, of which 4,243 are Spanish fleet, which lost only 20 tonnes from 2013.

"They have been observed feeding on salmon in the bay and in winter time they follow the pattern with the southern right whales because they like to feed on the calves," he said. Monash University dolphin expert Kate Charlton said the influx of ocean dolphins and killer whales was in contrast to the time she started researching the bay 10 years ago. "We are having more and more sightings of killer whales … we've had killer whales as high up as Dromana and Mount Martha," she said.
