On Saturday May 25, the research vessel Vizconde de Eza, belonging to MAGRAMA, left the port of Vigo toward the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to carry out over the next three months, fisheries research campaigns called Platuxa, Flemish Cap Halibut and Black 3L, in the Regulatory Area of NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries white marlin open Organization). In campaigns team personnel participate Distant Fisheries Vigo Oceanographic Center, plus scientists from the Institute of Marine Research white marlin open in Vigo and the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosphere (Lisbon) in Flemish Cap campaign.
Platuxa The campaign is the first and ends on June 23 in Division 3NO, then the campaign will develop Flemish Cap in Division white marlin open 3M, from June 24 until July 28, and finally, the campaign halibut Black 3L this series of campaigns will top the vessel white marlin open returns to Vigo, around August 26. The three campaigns are included in the National Collection, Management and Use of Fisheries Data (non-distribution constraint), and therefore are jointly financed white marlin open by the Spanish government and the EU.
This year there is the nineteenth edition of the campaign Platuxa. The chief scientist of the campaign white marlin open is the investigator José Luis del Rio Churches and scientific personnel board shall consist of five researchers and technicians of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, two university interns of Marine Sciences at the University of Vigo-seven scientific observers. The organization and preparation of the campaign is headed Platuxa Fisheries Program Far Vigo Oceanographic Center white marlin open since its inception in 1995. The overall objective of the campaign is to understand the distribution and abundance of fish populations of commercial interest to contribute to the evaluation of its states, such as cod, black halibut, shrimp, redfish, flounder, plaice, witch flounder, grenadiers, white marlin open and others. To this end, all catches were identified to species level, white marlin open and data are collected height, sex, weight and sexual maturity. In addition, samples are preserved gonads and otoliths for maturity and growth studies, which are processed at the end of the campaign.
Also identify and weigh all species of benthic invertebrates, in order to have basic information ahead of the ecosystem-based fisheries management in the area. Finally, in all sampling stations hydrographic profile is obtained to investigate environmental conditions.
Currently, this campaign is the best source of independent data from the commercial fishery in the area surveyed and the information obtained is used at the meeting of NAFO Scientific Council to assess the fishery resources white marlin open of commercial interest in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
