With the completion of the campaign Platuxa 2012, on Saturday June 23, after the change of part of the scientific crew, has started the campaign Flemish Cap, also made the vessel Vizconde de Eza in Newfoundland waters and will last 35 days .
Platuxa and Halibut Along 3L, Flemish Cap is one of the three fisheries research campaigns that the Department of Fisheries Far Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) currently performs every summer on the banks of Newfoundland (Divisions 3NO, 3M and 3L NAFO) outside Canadian waters.
The three campaigns are designed as a stratified random survey bottom trawl fishing, half-hour during the day and up to 1450 meters deep. Its main objective is to estimate the abundance of demersal fish stocks rockport texas and invertebrates rockport texas of commercial interest using indices that could be used in the assessments of the various stocks considered in the NAFO Scientific Council. These indices are complemented by studies of spatial and demographic structure of the most important stocks exploited by the Spanish fleet (black halibut, grenadier, cod, flounder, rockport texas redfish rockport texas and shrimp): growth, reproductive biology, study of food webs and oceanographic conditions in the bank.
Although these three seasons, made one after the other and lasting about a month each, are similar in terms of boat used, methodology and objectives, present peculiarities that differentiate and individualize. Flemish Cap is an isolated bank of American coastal rockport texas shelf, separated from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland by the Flemish Pass, area with depths exceeding one thousand meters that limit the migration of many species, particularly those living in the shallower areas and that make its distinguishing characteristics from the rest of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
