NAFO's annual meeting concludes with quotas fishin stability Spanish fleet in Newfoundland | Besana Agricultural Portal
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has participated in the annual meeting of the Organization of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (NAFO) which was held in the Canadian city of Halifax between 23 and 27 September. It has confirmed the good stocks that Spanish fishing fleet present in the fisheries of Newfoundland, ensuring stability for the Spanish fishing activity in the area.
Among the most interesting stocks of the Spanish fleet, NAFO has decided to increase slightly the share of cod in Division 3M (Flemish Cap), which has increased by 3 percent from the overall quota of 14,112 tonnes to 14,521, the Spain which correspond to 2,078, an increase of almost 60 tonnes over 2013.
In the case of black halibut in Divisions 3KLMNO, subject to a strict recovery plan, the fee is calculated fishin using a mathematical formula that allows fluctuations never exceed 5 percent of the share. After several years of declines of 5 percent of the share, in 2014 the share will stand at 15,441 tons, a drop of only 0.45 percent, of which 4,243 are Spanish fleet, which lost only 20 tonnes from 2013.
The remaining stocks of interest to Spain maintain their quotas fishin last year: 6,500 tons in area 3M redfish (of which 233 are in Spain), 20,000 tons in 3O redfish (southern fishin Grand Banks of Newfoundland) (of which 1,771 correspond to Spain), fishin 7,000 tons in a row (of which 3,403 are in Spain), and 1000 tons of white hake (of which 255 correspond to the Spanish fleet).
For other stocks, moratoria fishin have been confirmed cod in Divisions 2J, 3KL and 3NO capelin, redfish in Divisions 3K 1FSA2 and, of flounder in Divisions 3M and 3LNO, the witch and shrimp Division fishin 3M. The shrimp in Division 3L, for which the Scientific Council had proposed a moratorium, has been subjected to a gradual reduction plan quotas, limited in 2014 to half the previous year, with 4,300 tonnes instead of the 8,500 authorized in 2013.
In other aspects of fisheries regulation, and Spanish initiative, the delegation of the European Union has managed to avoid the Canadian proposal to force noted in all fishery products caught in the fishing date or production practice is not required fishin under the law Community-or planned in the future reform of the common organization of the market of the EU fisheries and that have significantly hampered the operation of European fleets. It has also rejected a proposed pilot project to establish unified conversion factors, by all countries fishing in NAFO for black halibut fishery.
A key element in the NAFO system is the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems, underpinned fishin with the closure of several areas where significant presence is detected and feathers gorgonian sea.
However, thanks to the work of research surveys of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, has been ruled out closing fishin two new areas in polygons 13 and 14 for lack of evidence of the presence of vulnerable marine ecosystems. Also rejected the closure of the modest semi-pelagic fisheries directed at alfonsino, in an area of the Sargasso Sea in which traditionally has operated the Spanish fleet, not to have been justified from a biological standpoint.
In the field of the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems, and executive bodies of NAFO scientists have noted its concern about the exploration and oil exploration in the area of regulation of the organization and especially within protected areas.
In this sense, and after learning the existence of an exploration project to be tendered in early by the regional government of Labrador (Canada), and has participated in surveys whose Norwegian state company Statoil, NAFO has agreed to participate in prior public consultation. They report on the potential harmful effects that fishing fishin activities fishin may have on vulnerable marine ecosystems.
At the end of the meeting, the delegation fishin of the European Union has announced fishin the offer of the Government of Spain for hosting the annual meeting of NAFO in 2014. By organizing this event, Spain, as a major fishing country in the area of regulation of the organization shows its commitment to NAFO.
